Ric Raking design work
On one of our first weeks we learnt how to Ric Rak using a large opened grips, by sectioning the hair into small amounts and wrapping each small piece in a figure of 8 around each grip, making sure we use all the hair and gripping it off at the ends with a closed grip. We did this along the whole of the hair line at the front. After gripping off each piece we used the straighteners to press gently over the wrapped hair to give the 'wriggly' waved effect, this created an effect of frizzed waves, when pulling the hairs apart.
When seeing the effects of this I thought this was a perfect technique to create an Elizabethan styled hair design and would love to incorporate this into one of my final designs.
I then used the frizzed waved hair created by the Ric raking to create a crown like shape across the front of the hairline and also created a cross effect with the unopened Ric raking across the backcombed quiff I created

A few pictures of the process of Ric Raking with an opened grip and using the figure of 8 motions with the hair to create the waved, frizzed effect.
Hair Design created by Ric Raking
Design of crossing over onto the buns, trying and different designs, as I felt this represented the lace from the corsets, as they would wear them to help with their posture and to narrow in their waists. The lace and the criss cross design inspired me with his design I created and enjoyed seeing how it turned out, it also gave the hair great texture which was popular during the 16th Century and I felt I related to his in my design with the Ric Raking.
I felt it wasn't as effective as I thought, that the hair needed to be longer to create the effect I was after. As I felt I wanted the pieces of hair longer instead it stopped on top of the backcombed rolled quiff. But overall, I was happy with the way it turned, it gave me inspiration and ideas to incorporate into my final design.
Side view of the 'Crown' inspired design, by gathering the pulled apart Ric Rak and folding it to create this effect, which I loved the outcome.
The front view of the Ric Rak pulled aprat and rolled and pinned to create this inspired look, representing royalty and the crown itself with the use of this technique, which I loved and will use this in one of my final designs. I did this also to show my modern twist on the Elizabethan style and I feel I have incorporated by of these in this design.
Ric Raking Design I created
I love this design I created, I crimped the hair, backcombed it all from behind to give them the lift and folded them in to create a slight heart shape with the dip in the middle of each crimped bun. I sectioned the hair which gave me orders of what I was going to do in what area, it looked neat and I felt happy with this look. I left a section along from the front of the hair line where I used grips with a piece of hair where I wrapped each piece around with a motion of figure of 8 and heated up each one with straighteners to give the zig zag effect of the hair, I pull each part out, which makes the hair expand and frizz; this was bunched up and gripped to create a crown.
However, I felt I needed to tidy up the back of the backcombed quiff as It sectioned and you can see gaps in my design that needed gripping to smoothen out my design, I would of also curled the remaining bottom part of the hair hanging freely or even waved them with tongs or fish tail plaited it. So next I am going to adapt this design into one of my final designs as I really loved the Ric Raking effect at the front of the hairline and I will adapt it based on my own hair.

Elizabethan and modern day frizzed hair design inspirations
I am inspired by this portrait of Queen Elizabeth I, with the curls at the front and the jeweled embellished hat at the back, I wanted to incorporate both into my design by creating a similar shape at the front of the hairline like this portrait but to make to more flamboyant and make it into a larger piece to reflect a crown, I thought of Elizabeth and her status, so I automatically thought of making a messy, frizzed, bold piece to reflect a Roysl Crown.

I was also inspired by this portrait and the shape of the front piece of her hair design and how bold and frizzy it is, I wanted to make a similar design but with the use of Ric Raking and to make it less neat but with the similar shape but making it more contemporary.

I loved this photo by David LaChapelle, I was inspired with the texture of the hair and the shape, I can see how they hair the frizzed with tight waves to create this design, therefore this inspired me for the Ric Raking and the shape I wanted to do with the free, messed, frizzed, modern effect.
It shows a unique, modern twist with Elizabethan with the use of the roundness and frizz effect. I found this photo very engaging and inspiring with my design.

This photo of Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth the movie also inspired me to design a frizzed but messy effect at the front of the hairline, I love the shape but wanted to make it more free moving to reflect my modern twist on the design.
